22nd Annual Conference September 16-20, 2010

Theme: 50 Years of Nationhood: Contemplating Nigeria’s Political, Strategic, Economic, Educational, and Cultural Identities and Visions

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The theme of the 2010 Annual Conference of International Association of Nigerian Studies and Development (IANSD) challenges conferees not only to think about, debate and analyze what critics have called Nigeria’s obfuscated visions, directions and identities, but to make tenable, intelligible and feasible ‘prescriptions’ of what should be substantive national, political, strategic, economic and cultural identities and visions that would galvanize Nigerians and make them proud to be citizens of a great nation.  Papers are welcomed that specifically address any of the following questions.

  1. Does Nigeria, as a nation, have a clearly articulated national interest, one which guides its national and foreign policies and actions, and gives it a respectable status internationally?
  2. What political ideologies and visions are espoused by Nigeria’s political groupings, which give Nigerians a sense of purpose, direction, citizenship and pride?
  3. What are Nigeria’s national security priorities and plans, assuring citizens of the safety of their lives and properties at home and abroad?
  4. How are specific policies and visionary plans put in place to boost and sustain Nigeria’s productive capacity on the economic, technological and human development fronts?
  5. What policy and programmatic initiatives are/should be in place to make Nigeria’s cultural diversity an asset rather than a liability to the nation?
Presenters are strongly advised to analyze Nigeria’s existing policies and programs, where such exist, as a basis for their prescriptions and/or recommendations. Proposed papers should fit into one of the following tracks, and should be submitted electronically and directly to the designated track co-chairs by July 31, 2010.

Papers should fit any of the following tracks.

Track 1: Issues of national interest, national ideology, foreign policy, international image (Osita Afoaku and Seyi Oduyela).

Track 2: Issues of political ideology, national politics, political parties, governance (Abi Awomolo and Ephraim Okoro)
